I would imagine a fast 35 whelen with a heavy bullet could kick more than a 300 mag..My /06 browning has kicked me harder than a friends ruger 300 winchester..Has alot to do with the weight of the gun and the stock..My CZ-550 in 375H&H is a sweet shooter as it is heavy..The 260 accubonds do not kick bad but the 300 grainers can when puched fast.. In drop and drift it's a ballistic twin to most 150-grain .30-06 loads, but it impacts much harder and has considerably greater frontal diameter. Odd as it may sound, I consider the .35 Whelen a far more useful sporting cartridge than the .308 Win., and in some ways it's more useful than the .30-06. I have both 30-06 and .35 Whelen Handi's. Of course, there is a solution to that: sharpen the shoulder and reduce the amount of case taper. How would you guys compare the 35 Whelen recoil in a handi rifle say to the recoil of the 30/06 handi rifle .I now shoot the 35 Whelen in a remington semi-auto and am thinking of getting a new handi rifle in the same caliber. Sometimes, choosing a tough bullet that minimizes expansion is the way to go.
I don't mean that is bad , I have had and still do guns of many makers.

The so-called improved version has a sharper shoulder which theoretically at least will maintain headspace against the blow of the firing pin better.
In the real world, firearms chambered for less powerful cartridges are typically built lighter than firearms chambered for more powerful cartridges.
It's not finicky about powder charge weights, is not prone to pressure spikes, and tends to do its best with whatever bullet you put in it. The parent of this cartridge is the .30-06 Springfield, which is necked-up to accept a bullet diameter of .358 in (9.1 mm).

Can’t ask for more from any rifle caliber for NA game. There is a recoil curve on my 30-06, as the bullet weights go up so does recoil. I also disagree with the comparison to magnum loads, and emphatically disagree that it is between 30-06 and 375. I have to say I’d love to have easier access to the kind of hunting y’all do in Alaska. This is how the cartridge got the nickname “The Poor Man’s Magnum.”.
However, as mentioned, the importance of choosing the right bullet for the task is of vital importance with the .35 Whelen because of the dramatic difference in the various cartridges that 0.358-inch-diameter projectiles are designed for. However, that is a lot more work than simply necking up the .30-06.
On Bud's Gun Shop website, 35 Whelen Handis are cheaper than all the rest, and when I was at Cabela's recently, they had 3 or 4 new 35 Whelen Handis, but no other calibers at all. Plus, that bigger bullet expands into a much bigger mushroom. Pulling that to the shoulder… the memories came flooding. Furthermore, recoil to me is negligible with either bullet. The.35 Whelen has over the years been available in both pump and semi-automatic Remington actions.
