Even though it ran fine in the middle possition, it runs throatyer it the richer position. A dyno run is only on the main jet, just like the dedicated plug choppers. The flared roll pin was very poorly flared and jagged. 23 5 rings Richest? I haven't had the chance to look into the actual jetting yet, but I did go through the proper setting of the air screw and I have certainly found more power. See below. Required fields are marked *. Should you find yourself in this predicament I recommend that you keep reading our Tech Tip post.. A pilot jet is a circuit (or meter) that controls the flow rate of fuel that is drawn into your carburetor, Different size pilot jets can help you achieve a rich or lean condition. Thank you for the thorough responses. It's probably backwards, but efi seems so much easier and far more accurate.
For example:

Trail and street riders do. I had no idea just how far it would spread though, if you do a Google search on Spanky's Jetting this article is all over the net in multiple forums. Jetting by feel is an art sometimes.

I should have copyrighted it..., Copyright, then print & distribute , everyone could benefit from one in their tool box. It runs stronger than I ever thought possible with the new carb and electronic ignition. Your run should be at least thirty seconds long to remove stopwatch user error. leave the jetting on the rich side.

I was thinking the bike was rich and adding to the air screw. HOWEVER, it still has issues.

What you are after when adjusting this screw, is too reach peak idle RPM and smoothness. This video walks you through removing them. I complete grasp the concept although I think the human factor may introduce far too many variables to keep things accurate.

This is true for most carburetors. Let’s define the carburetor butterfly or slide the dividing line between the air box side, and the engine side. I had actually felt a bit of power loss, groggy, tiny bog going on and this remedied it immediately.

The main thing is to change one thing at a time. If your fuel screw is in further than 2 turns, you need a leaner pilot. Lightly seat the fuel/air screw and set to factory settings as a baseline.

I put all new gaskets on the intake manifold just to be sure.

Unless its fast outdoor mx, most people splend 95% of every ride on the jet needle and there is literally no way an oxygen sensor is going to tell anything about a carburetor on a 2 stroke. Please note, comments must be approved before they are published, Triumph Motorcycle Inspired Shirts - Choose Shirt Style / Color / Size, 1950 BSA A10 Goldenflash Motorcycle T-Shirt, BSA Vintage Empire Star Motorcycle T-Shirt, ALL ORDERS SHIP SAME DAY BEFORE 12PM (PST) - DUE TO COVID-19 EXPECT DELAYS ON ALL DOMESTIC & INTERNATIONAL DELIVERY DATES, Create Account or Log In (No Account Needed To Order), Runs better when air screw is screwed all the way out, Should you have a lean condition, you must install a larger pilot jet, Should you have a rich condition, you must install a smaller pilot jet. Now, adjust between these two settings to achieve highest RPM and smoothest running engine. I've been a gear head for years but never messed with a carb, ever. A few years ago I put in Boyer ignition.

I had actually felt a bit of power loss, groggy, tiny bog going on and this remedied it immediately. Some finess was required to make a new flare, but anything is better than the crap they passed at the factory. If they dip below idle, lean the mix.

A rich pilot setting will result in hard starting, plug fouling at low RPM’s, sputtering as the throttle is cracked opened.

If engine bogs or hesitates during acceleration, richen idle screws 1/4 to 1/2 turn and see if that helps.

If these change, you may have to change jetting to suit. Rich: A "rich" condition is what occurs when you have too much fuel in your fuel/air mixture. This is borderline needing to jet down, correct?

Incluse baromentric pressure, temp and humdity (components of air density). With engine running at low RPM, turn the screw in clockwise until the engine begins to stumble, then turn the screw counterclockwise until the engine stumbles, noting how many turns in/out both occurred. That leaves massive amounts of needle tuning which can really only be done by the person whose bike it is. How do you determine the size of the jet you have? The pre-school pictures awesome too , This topic comes up so often that I sat down a long time ago and wrote this up do I could just copy/paste it in jetting threads. Here is an example of a an AIR screw adjustment.

If you're satisfied with how it's running, that's all that really matters. Back on the bike, with gas going to it, I found that the tickler would bearly move the float. It idles strong now with the mixture screw out 1 1/2 turns out. It will also cause a lean condition on the stand. Thanks again. But MXers dont care about low throttle jetting. As usual, the correct diagnosis is half the battle! Too lean feels fluttery and weak. Of coarse I have a timing light.

A buddy of mine has a small 4 wheeler dyno, maybe I'll try that.

A dyno cant tailor jetting for anyone. Contrary to a couple previous posts, a dyno with a WB O2 sensor is the most accurate way to dial in the jetting. It runs like the bat from hell, but I get a momentary bog under hard acceleration. Regardless, thanks a ton for your time in writing that up. I'm 35 and my body is already fairly beat up from sports, but I love the tinkering and my son has fallen head over heels with riding. A dyno run is only on the main jet, just like the dedicated plug choppers. So, I checked out the float. I didn't even notice, realize you wrote it. This symptom of a lean or rich condition is quite common on any carburetor, however, those that have the new Amal Premier carburetors or Wassell Evolution carbs will have the liberty of fine tuning the pilot circuit by swapping out the "removable pilot jets"

How are you guys dialing in air/fuel ratios off the butt dyno? Reset idle to recommended settings and test ride motorcycle. A pilot air screw will be made of brass, gold in color, and will have a blunt tip compared to a pilot fuel screw. Then use a weather station as a guide to adjust  for different temps, and altitudes. That keeps the fuel passages from getting fuel when there is a big change in "G" force, like a jump or whoops. I use the smallest diameter screwdriver so I generate the least amount of torque. If RPM’s hang, richen the mix. For example, say you do it 3/8ths throttle. Re: Am I lean or rich on the pilot jet? For example # 19 has 3 rings, does a #17 have 2 rings or 5 rings? It has crossovers.

The air screw can actually be effective down to about  half turn out. Liked it? You will find that a few needles or clip changes do not seem to do anything to your time. If the bike is running too rich it feels boggy on top and fouls plugs. It purrs at a low idle.

When driving it, I can tell it is way more powerful and smoother.

The butt dyno is not real accurate. Then if the mid throttle jetting isnt correct then change the needle, bigger taper angle for richer, and smaller needle taper angle for leaner. The pilot jet is sized correctly if the fuel screw setting falls between 2.5-3 turns out.

17 2 rings I bought my first bike 6 months ago, and a member on here was kind enough to PM me and walk me through the process.

Next a plug read (color). This condition is primarily caused by dirty air filters, but it could also result from the incorrect fitting of after-market accessories such as exhaust systems, air filter systems, or replacement carburetors of a different type or size.

It was set about a 1/4in low. So, I checked out the float. Amal Premier pilots have grooves on the ends.

That is why you always want to “lightly” seat these, the tips can easily break! Is a #17 leaner or richer than a #19? The slide is a 3 1/2, correct for a tr7v. It taught me a lot about how the carb works, and then I became infatuated with jets and needles.

Seems clear as day, but I'll be damned if can can tell the difference sometimes. In addition, if the fuel level is set too high in the float chamber, a rich mixture will result. Moving the clip and or different straight diameters will change the time it takes, at the same throttle position to 'make the run'.

Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Out of the box, I installed it and of course it ran like crap. Mark the grip so you know where you are in relation to ho open the arb is (1/8 incements from closed to fully open is enough). … Revving the engine in neutral will result in RPM dip below idle RPM, RPM’s will drop quickly. If your air screw is out further than 2.5 turns, you need a leaner pilot.

The new carb was obviously running too lean at idle. Symptoms can be a rough running engine (bogging), a … I now I replaced the coils some tme in the past wih stock new ones. This symptom of a lean or rich condition is quite common on any carburetor, however, those that have the new Amal Premier carburetors or Wassell Evolution carbs will have the liberty of fine tuning the pilot circuit by swapping out the "removable pilot jets". Your email address will not be published.

Not all Amal carbs have a removable pilot jet, in fact most original Amal Concentric carbs have a pressed in pilot jet that cannot be removed without some serious modifications.. Your goal is to make the run, at the steady throttle position, in the shortest time.

You will be 'on the needle', transitioning from straight to taper. That leaves massive amounts of needle tuning which can really only be done by the person whose bike it is. If you move the needle up or down then you change when the needle taper kicks in which may make the beginning jetting too lean or too rich.

I am thinking now, maybe the coils arn’t liking the compression load with the new carb. Way quicker and way more accurate. Hopefully you don't run it this way for long, terminal for engines. How could it be the coils? I now am completely hooked on jetting software that allows me to figure out the correct needle height. Wow.

They sure are. When in doubt, remove the screw and see what kind of tip it has, that will determine what it meters. Anyway, once it’s past the bog it’s on it’s way to doing 100mph with no problem. You can also do tests with a stop watch, a mild hill long enough to make a decent ride on. If your engine doesn’t respond to air screw changes, then you either have a dirty carb, or the pilot jet is way too rich. I'm used to throwing a car on the dyno with a wideband to get the air/fuel in the right range. 15 1 ring Leanest?

It runs like the bat from hell, but I get a momentary bog under hard acceleration. The problem is it still has a bog, as if an acceleration pump is no good, which it dosen’t have. It has crossovers. I’ve seen the pilot air screw on the engine side on most Amal carburetors. The engine was overhauled 10 years ago and still has great compression.
Oil being in the fuel has to change things quite a bit. https://thumpertalk.com/topic/347305-is-your-two-stroke-running-rich-read-here/. The best part of this short video is the concise DIAGNOSIS of idle jet problems.Ari details the classic symptoms of this very vexing issue. Moving the float down to tickle better was not working. I put a .019 idle jet in it, up from the stock .017, skipping the .018 because it was idling very lean. A few years ago I put in Boyer ignition. Some finess was required to make a new flare, but anything is better than the crap they passed at the factory. Here is a short video I put together to help explain this information along with a FUEL screw adjustment procedure. Symptoms of a rich condition can be a rough running engine (sputtering), a black spark plug, a wet plug or excessive plug fouling.

Tickeling is immediate now and the float is dead on. Tremendous improvement, better than I expected. So you purchased a new Amal Premier carburetor and noticed that your classic motorcycle is running too rich or too lean on the pilot circuit.
