I run new Nylea now—might be even better there because I have more sub-4 power creatures worth mutating than I did with Goreclaw, and need the trample.

See cards from the most recent sets and discover what players just like you are saying about them. As I mentioned before, this deck’s biggest weakness is targeted removal so some options for protection are the classic shoes, Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves. If multiple replacement effects could be applied to the merged creature leaving the battlefield or being put into its new zone, applying one of those effects affects all of the moving objects. It’s super exciting that we get this year’s commander product right along side the release of the new set and that we get to experience the new mechanic, Mutate, in this precon. This page was last edited on 6 September 2020, at 12:49. It also has pseudo haste because it is the same creature that was played the turn before even with Otrimi on top. Find is the best part of this card, but Finality is too unreliable. forget the triggered ability, if you have a creature on board to mutate this is a 6/6 trample haste for 4. Naru Meha is an instant-speed strategy aiming to play counter-control. We already talked about taking out Fertilid for something better. Alright, today’s post is all about the new Commander 2020 pre-con, Enhanced Evolution and its commander, Otrimi, the Ever-Playful. It can't be put in the middle. Huntmaster Liger Creature — Cat3/4 Mutate (If you cast this spell for its mutate cost, put it over or under target non-Human creature you own.

I know I’m excited for mine. It’s easily one of the best new cards in the set. Other than that, I wouldn’t run any additional mana rocks besides the Arcane Signet, Sol Ring, and Manascape Refractor that are included in the pre-con which are all insanely good.

Dirge Bat destroys a creature or planeswalker and Gemrazer destroys an artifact or enchantment. Lightning Greaves is a little cheaper than usual right now thanks to some recent reprints so be sure to pick them up while they’re still cheap. The best version of this that we can play in this deck is Heroic Intervention which has recently dropped a little in price, but is still around 15 bucks at the time of this writing. Birds of Paradise is a pretty good early mana dork that can also be mutated to give one of your bigger creatures flying.

Bonder’s Ornament is pretty much awful. Otrimi also helps combat balance out this weakness with his last ability to return mutate cards from our graveyard to our hand. Just be careful because the Legend Rule will apply and force you to sacrifice any additional copies you make of Otrimi this way for example. Lastly, here are some additional cards we can probably cut. If an ability triggers when a creature mutates and counts how many times that creature has mutated, it includes the time that caused the ability to trigger. The merged creature is the same creature it was before the merge, so any. Sounds not bad. Neither of these are very playable on turn three. Lastly, let’s talk about some creatures from the new set that slot right into this deck.

Guardian Project is ok in this deck… It’s not as amazing because mutating doesn’t cause it to trigger. For example, we can play Tomebound Lich which is a 1/3 Zombie Wizard (not a human so it can be mutated) with Deathtouch, Lifelink, and “Whenever Tomebound Lich enters the battlefield or deals combat damage to a player, draw a card, then discard a card.” Then on the next turn, mutate Otrimi on top of Tomebound Lich and you’ve got a 6/6 with Trample, Deathtouch, Lifelink, and both triggered abilities that go off when it deals combat damage to a player. The value is real and the Timmy inside of me cannot wait to make plays like this. The reason this works great with our mutate strategy is that when one of our stacks of 2 or 3 mutated creatures dies, then ALL of them will come back separately and with a +1/+1 counter on each of them!

All three Impetus cards are really not that great. You don’t have to, and some cards like Hungering Hydra aren’t necessarily bad with Otrimi, but our goal is to focus on Otrimi. The distinctive aspect of Mutate is that the final creature can be the size of either the mutating creature or the creature it targets, which means the battlecruiser magic of multiple Auras is not present. The Great Henge is currently pretty expensive but if you have one and you want to throw it in it’s an incredible card. It gives your creatures Hexproof and allows you to regenerate target creature for 1 and a green.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed is an expensive but really cool card to include if you can. If the merged creature has any abilities referring to it by name, such as that of, An ability that triggers "whenever this creature mutates" triggers when a mutating creature spell becomes part of the merged.

You’re gonna have some huge non-Human creatures to draw cards from or end the game with depending on which mode you choose.

It’s not bad! Mutate has roots in Bestow, Emerge and Augment, acting like an ability-granting Aura spell. Mutate (If you cast this spell for its mutate cost, put it over or under target non-Human creature you own. I’m not a big fan of them. Because we are going to be talking about upgrading this deck for Otrimi, I suggest taking most—if not all—of this part of the deck out including Zaxara.

That one is up to you.

Return of the Wildspeaker is pretty amazing in this deck!

Again, remember that mutate is an alternate casting cost and can be cast from the top of your library with her second static ability.

The best upgrade we can probably make to the targeted removal is taking out Putrefy for Assassin’s Trophy which is pretty expensive but just so good. Also, if you’re picking up this precon, enjoy your new Deadly Rollick. Brokkos, Apex of Forever is a 6/6 for 2 generic, 1 black, 1 green, and 1 blue with Trample and “You may cast Brokkos, Apex of Forever from your graveyard using its mutate ability” which costs 2 generic, 1 blue/black hybrid, and 2 green mana to do. Note that Mutate is still casting and it requires you to target a creature. The removal in this precon is already pretty good!

The characteristics of the combined merged creature are copiable. Search for the perfect addition to your deck. Parcelbeast and Sea-Dasher Octopus are Mutate creatures that can provide a little bit of extra value when played correctly. You can, however, include many creatures with infect that go really well with mutate but you didn’t hear that from me. A merged creature can't be split apart until it leaves the battlefield. On to ramp. If not, don’t worry too much about it. The idea is to make it so that your opponents’ creatures can’t attack you or you get a decent buff for enchanting your own guys. Turn 3, Goreclaw, turn 4, 7/7 trampling mana dork for two mana? An ability that triggers "whenever this creature mutates" triggers whether the ability came from the mutating creature spell or from the creature that the mutating creature spell merged with. Other creatures we can add that are similar to Tomebound Lich are Dimir Cutpurse, Leyline Prowler, Thief of Sanity, Turntimber Basilisk, and Vedalken Heretic. With all of that out of the way, the point of this video today is to talk about some of the cards that I think can be taken out of the pre-con, cards that can be easily added because they are budget-friendly, and other more expensive cards that can be added if convenient. This is a land-go deck that controls the game early and sculpts your hand with interaction early-mid game. https://rss.com/podcasts/commandvalleypodcast/36583. Whenever this creature mutates, other creatures you control get +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the number of times the creature has mutated. We already took out Masked Admirers and Bonder’s Ornament, but as for additional card advantage, we can probably stand to lose Illusory Ambusher and Mulldrifter if we really have to.

If you can, you should upgrade it immediately. Mind Spring can be traded out for Pull from Tomorrow which is an instant and the cost to upgrade which is discarding a card feels a lot less bad with our commander being able to return mutate cards to our hand. Other creatures that aren’t super optimal include Archipelagore and Auspicious Starrix (both of which I feel are too expensive for what they do and can easily be replaced by better Mutate creatures from the main set) Boneyard Mycodrax, and Predator Ooze. Other upgrade options include Colossal Majesty that draws us a card each turn at the beginning of our upkeep if we have a creature with power 4 or greater and Season of Growth that allows us to scry 1 when a creature ETBs under our control and draw a card whenever we cast a spell that targets a creature we control.
