Depp's "Hunter" is a cartoon character, mugging and prancing and doing almost nothing else, and the film seems to make no effort whatsoever to give you the tongue-in-cheek attitude or irony needed to contextualize the narration as anything which makes sense within the word of the film or as a commentary on it. The cinematography and content gradually get under your skin. . . Remember that Depp was actually good friends with Thompson in real life and even funded his funeral in which his ashes were fired from a cannon.
