Yet more importantly it's what drives them to seek this fun--wanderlust, disappoint, the "death of the American dream" which make it more meaningful than a bunch of idiots shooting up for a weekend. But I doubt many are fully understanding the point of the film. . Whatever it meant. Depp does a pretty damn good job adapting the character of Raoul Duke and, as I said, the gist of the book is covered very well. . I'd say that scene reflects the movie's attitude. In the end, I agree with Ebert's appraisal of the movie as one which felt pretty interchangeable from scene to scene, and lacked a real perspective to conceptualize the comedy as anything more than just what you were seeing on the screen. Fear and Loathing is essentially a film that you can just have fun with. So for sure, the movie's all over the map and seems not to hold much in the way of plot or character arcs. The trouble it gave you with disbelief didn't bother me as I don't think the film was worried about hiding its artifice, and it united the madness together (plus, Thompson's prose is wonderful to hear). I would just like to add my two cents (sorry i'm a bit late). Fucking masterpiece. I didn't know any of the actors or the director. Depp's "Hunter" is a cartoon character, mugging and prancing and doing almost nothing else, and the film seems to make no effort whatsoever to give you the tongue-in-cheek attitude or irony needed to contextualize the narration as anything which makes sense within the word of the film or as a commentary on it. The cinematography and content gradually get under your skin. . . Remember that Depp was actually good friends with Thompson in real life and even funded his funeral in which his ashes were fired from a cannon. Let me summarize the genius of this film, and Hunter Thompson with one magnificent quote: “Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. I actually think that film transcends Ebert and your critique that the film "lacked a real perspective to conceptualize the comedy as anything more than what you were seeing on the screen" a little due to the voiceover narration. but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Although Depp really nailed it, Murray had his own version which I enjoyed greatly. Sure those parts are fun, but it's about the loss of opportunity, about the passing of time, and reflecting if any of it really mattered. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. I haven't really formulated a solid opinion about the movie yet, mostly because it was so abstract, so I was interested to see what other people thought. I don't know how Terry Gilliam does it, but you can often tell just from a single frame—or something like the clothes that people are wearing, or their facial expressions—that you're watching a Gilliam film, much like early Peter Jackson. Gilliam was very loyal to the book, adapting it very literally, and which caused some problems. I think, though, that I like it a little more than you—the ingenuity "used to depict the altered states of consciousness" is pretty fantastic and makes the film well worthwhile despite its admittable flaws. Usually I prefer going into films blind, however that's not the case with Fear and Loathing. I may watch it again, but I do feel fine saying that I did enjoy the film. While maybe not for everyone, the movie does a pretty good job of representing the book. By no means. There is a particular scene in which the hotel room is just desecrated and I was repulsed by it. It's a half comedy that feels like a roller coaster. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing I knew about it going in was this line: Raoul Duke: We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. This movie's definitely something of a surreal mess, but while I can't necessarily say that it's faithful to Thompson's vision or aesthetic since I don't know much about the novel or the man, it does seem to come from a consistent place stylistically and I found it to be at least aesthetically pleasing throughout. As someone whose friends dabble in this kind of behavior, I found it rather enjoyable. Whenever the voiceover would start, my suspension of disbelief always failed to, well, suspend. .
