Domaine de la Côte de l’Ange – Old Vines
Chateauneuf du Pape AOC
Grape varieties:
Grenache 80% – Mourvèdre 20%
Vineyard:
The Mestre Family is one of the most ancient in Chateauneuf du pape, and its members come from a line of wine growers. In the 60′ Monique and Jean-Claude Mestre took over te family brand name and create their own vineyard with some of the vines from the “Coteaux de l’Ange”. The domain is now run by their daughter Corinne and her husband Yannick, who are carrying on the business with respect for the old wine growing tradition. The 85-year-old vines stretch on a surface area of 2.5 acres made of clay limestone. They are pruinned following the “Goblet” system, all hand-picked and sorted. The soil is tilled and the vines sprayed only when necessary.
Winemaking:
After a direct pressing in a pneumatic press, and a month of maceration the 20% of the Mourvèdre is vinified in conical tanks made of new oak. The 80% of Grenache in concrete tanks and matured in conical oak tanks.
Tasting Note:
With a superb deep purple color the wine displays great richness and maturity: raspberry jam, crushed strawberry and cocoa aromas along with smoky notes, sweet spices, garrigue and game. In the mouth it is rich, full, intense as well as powerful and lingering with its stewed fruit and smoky notes with hints of licorice.
Food Pairing:
This great wine will be delightful along with a stew beef or with grilled duck or lamb with a mushrooms sauce.
