Notes from Dan Berger’s Vintage Experiences
2017 Moulin Jamet Sancerre ($14): This was a nice discovery. We had been buying all sorts of Sancerres over the years looking for aromas with typicité. We found several that were good, and wrote about the best. Most were $20 to $30. This discovery at Trader Joe’s (only in California, alas) has a classic herbs-and-tea aroma, and only fails one test: I can’t be sure it will improve in 2-3 years, a trait I love to be able to focus on. That, however, is a minor problem. This wine is as dry as it should be, and offers a delightful mid-palate of varietal flavor. I suspect that this wine had been imported to sell for more money, but the importer (Wine Wine Situation, Los Angeles) had more of it they could reasonably sell, and the only large buyer short of a “bomber” (a very deep discounter) who was interested was Trader Joe’s. But the supply couldn’t accommodate all 480 stores in the chain, but TJ’s wine buyers like the persistent regional characteristics and the price was probably about as low as you could imagine.
